Been working on my book trailer...whatcha think?

Keep in mind it's still a work in progress but I think you'll get the idea. It's the first time I've worked with Windows Movie Maker and it's more versatile than I thought... What do you think I should change? (I have to change some of the images because some are just filler.)

Clarissa - I am in awe!! This is absolutely wonderful! You really caught my attention! I think you've captured the flavour of the book, too, and it certainly keeps a good pace. Well done!

THank you. I need to make some changes where the music is choppy and I have to make some changes with the photos but I think it's the plot I'm going for.

You did that yourself? That's really awesome!

Clarissa Draper said...

Yeah, it actually wasn't that hard once I figured out all the features.

That was really freakin' cool, both the images and the soundtrack! Bravo!

Glad you liked it, Amanda. Any suggestions?

Blown away! I am going to have to check out Movie Maker a little more...I have only dabbled with it, but this was very cool. How long did it take you to do this? Where did all the video clips come from? Awesome job.

Clarissa Draper said...

Chuck, I've been working on it for two days. The clips come from various places, there are free web sites for unlicensed photos and stuff. Some stuff I have to change because it's just filler.

It is definitely awesome. You did a great job. I'm in awe too. It flows beautifully and the music is great with it. You don't need any suggestions from us, you've pretty well nailed it.

That was BRILLIANT. I'm impressed you did it yourself. How long did it take you? I've done film editing in the past, and put together a number of multimedia packages so I might be a little picky.. are you ready for it? (if not stop reading)

Great overall pace, nice beginning and then BOOM! excellent. Where you have "Time is" then show a digital clock I stopped to wonder what time it was...then text came up to say "running out" and I thought..ooooh. SO maybe have the "Running out" with the image of the digital clock rather than after. (told ya I could be picky)

As for the following images... brilliant. Nice cuts/transitions. Loved the red text..but then for spies the text changes to white. Consistency is really important in any kind of graphic design project - unless you want to put an emphasis on something by making it different.

With the lust and love section you changed the way you transitioned the text. You put it on a large black background and after coming off the zing of the earlier images I wasn't sure if blank black was the answer (altho I get what you meant by the change). Mind you, it works well for "Solve the code" etc near the end.

My only other comment is the LONG text "The first.....mystery" That's too much to read in one hit.

BUT, that's just being picky. It's a GREAT trailer. You should be proud of your work.(I hope I wasn't too hard).

Clarissa, you want to know what I think? I think you're freaking brilliant.
First the book and now the trailer. I didn't even notice that the music was "choppy." the tempo made me want to make a mad dash seomwhere and but the book!

Wow - I'll join the choir here - this was awesome! I'm so impressed that you made that yourself (I have tried Windows Movie Maker, so I don't buy that it is as easy as you claim. You clearly have a lot of talent).

I am not actually all that fond of book trailers, mostly because those I have seen often have random (unknown) actors portraying the main characters, and these are often not at all compatible with the characters you already know and love (if it's a series). This trailer, though, captured the feel of the book, and that is way more efficient. This is the sort of trailer that could be showed at a movie theatre before an action or thriller movie, and members of the audience will be left with a "if you liked this movie, you will also like this book" feeling. That is reaching out to potential readers who otherwise might never know your book even existed, which in my opinion is the best reason to have a book trailer at all.

This is absolutely brilliant.
I can be nitpicky- in places like "Running out"- I would not capitalise the R because it is actually taken from within a sentence. After Love, I would hare preferred to have just the scene of the hands touching (the kiss was more lust than love, to me, though it could as well be love). But other than that, fantastic!

The part I really loved was when you had terrorists, killers, spies all overlaid on visuals, followed by lust on a blank background- that was a brilliant touch. And the montage of photographs that came twice.

I am impressed. Really, really impressed.

Um first of all I came here from Alex Cavanaugh's blog and am now your newest follower.

Nice to meet you!

Second, that trailer is freaking awesome! Very exciting. Well done.

This is fantastic. I love it. Well done. I followed over from Alex's blog. Great dialogue writing tips. Thanks!

Clarissa Draper said...

Lynda, man, you are picky... But, I love it! How else will I know what people think if they don't tell me. Thank you. I will see what I can do.

Pat, awww, thanks. Well, good news is, you're getting to read it for free. I'm glad you like it though.

Cruella, that is one of the reasons I didn't introduce my characters because I didn't want people to envision something while reading and say, "that's not like the trailer at all."

Rayna, thanks so much! I will change that R and some other things. I hope to be done with it by the end of the week.

Matthew, thank you! Nice to meet you too. I will go and follow your blog too if I haven't already.

Christine, glad you liked them. I'm now a follower too.

Clarissa, YOU DA BOMB!
This is the most impressive trailer I've seen in a long time. It doesn't give too much away but intrigues me to read the book.

The one thing your trailer does for me specifically as a reader is challenge me to solve a problem. That is powerful stuff.

You did this using moviemaker? This is great. I never got very good at moviemaker and prefer using Vegas Video. You da bomb, Clarrisa. That's all I can say.

LOVED IT. In a normal would I would have just watched it and wanted the book, but after your help with my writing, I watched it a couple more times analytically (my family helped me do that with my book trailer, and it made a huge difference). SO here are some thoughts...toss them or use them how you like:

WORDS: I love the opening "London." exciting city, lots going on, and the whole world wants to read about it. "Time is...Running Out" also works for me.

Killers works, but would it have more impact if it was "Assassins" or "Murderers"? Same with "Lust/Love" I might try sexing that up a bit..."Sex/Passion" or something more alluring.

IMAGES: love the map of Europe (makes me think of an exciting Interpol adventure), I love the feet in the sex part, and the hands in the interview room...both convey strong emotion.

I don't love the time image at the beginning. I'd prefer a full clock, or something a bit more dramatic.

One other thing I would change is the lettering at the end...I don't like it off to the right.

I like the music. (def. did not notice this so called "choppy" effect.)

Okay, now I have to go read those chapters!! (i.e., desired effect achieved and then some.)

I wouldn't say I'm easily impressed, but this was a pretty impressive effort. Windows Movie Maker you say? Nothing I ever tried ever looked that good. You must have done a lot of stuff with Movie Maker to be that adept.

J.L., Never have I used WMM before. Ever. Never. First time. I know people say it's difficult but it's not really.

Robin great advice. I will make those changes. Actually, the book is nothing like that. ha ha ha. just joking. but I wanted to show the reader that it's a thriller but with a mystery.

arlee bird, nope. It does take a bit of figuring out, but once I did that, it's much easier.

I think that looks REALLY fabulous! I think the only thing I'd suggest is a tiny bit more early and middle that is book specific--maybe about your hero or heroine, or about this case specifically, but the tension, graphics, intrigue is FABULOUS!

Clarissa Draper said...

Thanks, Hart. I think you're right.

From one writer to another, I say, keep that pen moving (or keys as it's now the case).
Cheers!

nice trailer, nice quality, I'd just put a bit more words in it. But it's a job well done.

Martin Edwards said...

I am very impressed. Wish I had the aptitude to do something similar!

Clarissa Draper said...

Dezmond, thanks. I didn't put many words in because of the speed of the music but I guess I could.

Martin, it wasn't that hard but I love the way it turned out.

Looking good so far. Glad to see it capped at 68 seconds. Too many trailers are far too long. Should only be about a minute. I would like to see something about the protagonist. Maybe I missed it. His or her name should appear. And maybe end the clip with a question. "Will Rocky McToughnut gather the clues and solve the code before more innocent people die?"

Clarissa Draper said...

Good idea, Stephen.

hi miss clarissa! wow that trailer is soooo cool. i like stuff that get moving fast and music thats got a beat to match it. how did you ever know how to do something so neat. on the other stuff you said im thinking i like that idea to go light up all the stuf the mc said so i could tell if its good or not. now im gonna go watch that trailer a bunch more times.
...smiles from lenny

Amanda Sablan said...

Well, now that you mention it...

It's really no big deal, but I think your book trailer would be better if it didn't come with the captions. We can already tell what's going on anyway. :]

I loved this, and now I want to be able to run out to buy your book. This was awesome! And I'm glad I discovered your blog. :)

I haven't liked most of the book trailers I've watched, so I wasn't expecting to like this one, but I thought it was great. You managed to convey excitement the way movie trailers do, without having to resort to reenacting scenes from the book, which usually doesn't work well. Impressive work!
