What I love about my Kindle...

I've had my Kindle for about a week now and can I just say, I LOVE IT! Did I say that I LOVE IT?
I was worried about the $250 purchase (including case with light) but I think it's worth every penny!

What's NOT so hot:

1) The screen flashes black when you turn every page - however, after only one day, I didn't notice the flashing anymore.  Some say it will take up to two weeks to get used to it but I don't think it's any more annoying (distracting) than turning a page in a paperback book.

2) I own a PDA where you use a stylus to tap the screen. I keep thinking my Kindle works the same way and keep looking for the stylus holder. You have to get used to moving around on your Kindle with the directional buttons alone.

3) When you use the internet a lot, the battery goes down fast. This is common with all technology. However, just reading alone (with the wireless off), I think the device will go a long time without charging.

What I love about it:

1) The screen-saver - AMAZING. When you put the Kindle to sleep, pictures of different authors and pictures from books fill the screen. I love the ones of Bronte, Austen, Dickens and other classic authors.

2) My cover. Now, I know this doesn't come with the Kindle but I have to say, it's amazing to have the soft faux suede cover-interior touch my skin while I read. (It really is the little things in life that make me happy.) And two nights in a row I read with the light and loved how it did not disturb my husband.

3) I read a lot more.

4) I now use my Kindle to critique. I take the documents I need to edit or critique and turn it into .txt format. I copy it to the document drive and it's automatically converted to Kindle format. Now, I can actually change the documents but I can make notes and save them. When doing a critique, I can just take those notes and copy them into my document. And I can edit/critique on the go.

5) I can take bits of text I like from the books and there's an easy way to upload them straight to Twitter and Facebook. That's a cool feature.

What do you like about yours?

  1. I just got mine this month too! I haven't noticed my screen turning black between page turns. Either mine doesn't do it, or it's so quick it didn't bother me.

I have been reading much more, and I adore the 'Try Sample Chapter' option.

I keep my wifi turned off. I only use the Kindle internet when I buy a new book, and that doesn't take all that long. So, I've found my battery lasts ages. I've been having to charge it only about once every 4 or 5 days.

I'm a total Kindle convert! (Had a Sony eReader before this -- Kindle is awesomerererer.)

  2. Clarissa - Thanks for pointing out what works and doesn't work for you. I have yet to get an E-reader, but at some point, I probably will save up the money for one.

  3. oooh! I'm jealous. Think I will have to get one. Just need to have one. Gotta have one. What is the matter with me? The only thing that puts me off is that I really like to read in the tub - and that seems like one place you couldn't read a kindle. Oh well, not like I won't have other books and mags around is it?

  4. Sounds like the kindle is the way to go. My best friend has one and she loves her. One of these days (probably just as they're going out of style) I'll get around to getting one. They do sound handy. Hope you continue to enjoy yours.

  13. Love my kindle, too! Haven't quite figured out the conversion of documents thing, but I'm sure it'll come to me.

  14. I love my Kindle, but I don't use it anywhere near as much as I should. Mostly because I'm a bookaholic, and can't walk past a bookstore without picking up 3 or 4 new books. Somehow I manage to do this in a country which doesn't speak English. lol.

  15. I don't have a Kindle. Its on my Christmas list. Too much stuff happened this year that luxuries like a Kindle have to wait for Santa to bring me.

    Enjoy your new toy!

  16. Hi Clarissa
Your post popped up at a timely moment. I was just discussing the Kindle with my other half, debating whether or not to get one. I think I'm convinced! Maybe Santa will bring me one.

  17. I've had a Kindle since March abd love it. I'm reading so much more. Sometimes I forget the books cost money cause it's just so easy to download.

There's nothing wrong with mine, but I still want the new one.

  18. I have Kindle for Mac but it's hasn't taken over my reading life yet. Except when I want a book at midnight and I can't wait!

  20. Wish I had an answer, but no, I have no Kindle. I'm still hinting to my Santa. Thanks for your post, though. It makes me want one even more.

  21. I don't have a kindle. I just use the Kindle for PC app. I don't know when I'll get around to getting a kindle, probably not likely until after insurmountable debts decline. Still, it's good to see other people enjoying kindles.

  22. It sounds as though the disadvantages are things you'll get used to so the downsides are only temporary, and if it means you're reading more then that's FANTASTIC. Sounds expensive though.
I gave a talk recently and the audience were all clutching their copies of my book apart from one man... who had a kindle! Yes, I saw my book on a kindle for the first time. It was quite a thrill and I was very impressed by it. But of course I signed all the books.

  23. A week or two ago I got as far as *considering* buying an e-reader, but now some of the important British shops have stopped selling e-books to foreigners. I´d never consider buying one only for Danish books so now I´ll have to wait and see if they come to their senses.

  24. Wish I had a kindle but there's a lot of liscensing issues for it in Australia which means I miss out on a lot of the extra features for it (as well as some books!)

  25. Hi Clarissa,

My e-reader is fabulous. What I like the best about it, is that it's soft on the eyes. There's no backlight, glare or reflection.

    Your one sounds terrific.

  26. I really want one.

  27. You have almost convinced me about trying the Kindle. Never thought an e-book could match up to a real one, but you seem to be having a sensory experience too.

  28. I just got a kindle 3 weeks ago. I agree, the screensaver images are awesome! I love the sample chapters! And I love that it's easy to hold with one hand. And it was awesome taking it on vacation, as opposed to bringing 3 or 4 books. And finally, I love the highlighting feature. I'm glad you're liking yours too. :)

  29. I too love my K3. I had a K2 that met an untimely death, but the upgrade was so worth it!

I agree with all your points on why you enjoy your K3 (and lighted cover) although I haven't used my Kindle to critique/read my own documents. I'm sure that's something I'll get into more as time goes on but overall, I think Kindles are fantastic.

  30. This is all great information to have. Thanks for sharing. I'm glad you like your new reader!

  31. The kindle is so awesome. I read more because I don't have to remember to bookmark pages. So, I can come back at anytime and there it is waiting for me. I like the highlighting feature. I also like arranging my collection by names. It is really a seamless instrument. I don't even notice the page turning flicker.
