I've decided to do a series entitled: "Life Of A Writer". It's not going to discuss writing but rather everything a writer can do - when he or she is not writing - to get back to writing quicker. Because, let's face it, I'd rather be writing but often the mundane parts of life get in the way. This is a series more for me rather than for my readers but please feel free to take whatever recipes or tips you find on this site. I'm 34 and I doubt I'll look back on my deathbed and wished I had done more housework and cooking. In fact, if that thought does cross my mind, I'm delusional. I would regret, however, not finishing the last novel. Here are some things I hate to do:
Here are some other things I hate doing:
- Cooking
- Shopping
- Planning Meals
- Picking up dog poo
- Driving People Around
Hopefully, if you are a writer that also hates the things I've listed above, you'll find this series helpful.
Recipe One: Chicken La Bamba
Ingredients:
1) Fresh chicken breasts - as many as it takes to feed the amount of people in your home - doesn't that make sense?
2) Green Onions - chopped
3) Chunky salsa in a can/jar - open with your hand
3) White Cheese - by this I mean mozzarella or any other kind of whitish, melty cheese. (You can either slice it with a knife or grate it.)
Here's what you do:

| This is a broiler pan. |
2) Just BEFORE it's done, add green onions and salsa to top of breasts and bake a few minute more until done. Make sure it's done because you don't want to get sick. There should not be any pink showing.
3) A minute AFTER done, put the cheese on the top and melt.
4) Eat.
Calories: Probably a lot. It's got cheese.
How to make it lighter: Eat less of it.
What can you eat it with?
- French Fries
- Brown or Wild Rice
- Vegetables
- Salad
- A Beer
- Wine
- The list is endless - do you want me to go on?

Clarissa - What a wonderful idea for a series! You are so right that very often, things like shopping, cooking and so on keep us from writing. As though Writer's Block, our own insecurities and so on weren't enough to do that! Your recipe sounds delicious, and I'm definitely going to look forward to the other suggestions you offer :-).
ReplyDeleteah, Clarissa, how can you possibly hate cooking and shopping? :)))
ReplyDeleteMy kind of recipe! Good food and a laugh -- great way to start a day. Can't wait for the rest of the series.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone really LIKE any of the jobs you listed? Not me, for sure ;)
My plan is to become rich so other people can cook, clean and drive my children around. Did someone say...lottery. LOL. The recipe sounds good. I use my crock pot a lot...or at least I used to before I started this editing project.

WIN!!
In all honesty, I live in a country where I can afford a woman to come in two days a week to clean for me. That's been a writer's-life-saver. However, for those who can't afford that (and that was me a few months ago) this series will be for you.

I hate housework full stop. Hate it. But I get a sense of achievement when my kitchen sink is sparkling, my bath is shiny and my floors are glinting!! LOL!!! It's like writing. I hate the editing side of things, the revisions, the blank page, the headaches!! but the afterwards... what a sense of peace and calm!
ReplyDeleteGreat recipe!! I'm a veggie and like my comfort food!! :-) Take care

hi miss clarissa! mostly me and my brothers and my sister share out the house cleaning stuff so it gets done quick. one of my brothers mostly does all the cooking. he goes at school and works on a part time job so he could like this recipe cause it looks pretty fast and pretty easy. im gonna copy it for him.
ReplyDelete...hugs from lenny
Chicken is a really versatile meat and I am always looking ofr a great way of serving chicken. I will definately try this recipe out. Thankyou very much.
ReplyDeleteI dislike the housework but enjoy meal planning and cooking. In fact, while cooking I like to think about my writing. Chopping and stirring leave your head free for writerly thoughts.
ReplyDeleteI like your no-nonsense culinary method.
Sounds yummy!

this is a fantastic post and an EXCELLENT idea! I'm in that after phase/waiting phase. Revisions done, writing done, what to do now??? I wanna write more! :D oh, wait. I also have a life. ;p
ReplyDeleteThe crock pot is a writer's friend! I'm lucky enough not to have kids or pets anymore, so that saves some time housecleaning and interruption-wise.
ReplyDeleteI'm so with you on the housework thing - I detest it. Thank goodness we get some visitors, or our flat would never get cleaned! Thanks for the recipe!
ReplyDeleteClarissa you are officially brilliant. Rather than whining about how little time we have to write, how much better to go after it and figure out how to shave the minutes off all that stuff that stands in the way. And this recipe looks wonderful btw. I look forward to your new series of posts.
ReplyDeleteIf you liked picking up dog poo, I'd be worried about you! And I'd rather be writing than working.
ReplyDeleteHousework? Never heard of it.
ReplyDeleteCooking? Well, yes. Occasionally, I cook, so I'm looking forward to your delicious recipes.
ha ha you are right Clarissa, I have been doing smaller portions lately to go easy on the calories.
ReplyDeleteWait wait wait... You hate shopping? Shopping groceries or shopping anything else? No one hates shopping, surely?! But thanks for the recipe, I wouød've tried it if I wasn't a vegetarian:)
ReplyDeleteA brilliant idea for a series. Any tips you have to speeding up housework, especially laundry (my most hated of all chores) will be greatly appreciated.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to trying out Chicken La Bamba for myself. Sounds yummy.
I love the Calories guide and 'how to make it lighter' suggestion at the end. :-)
Hi Clarissa! I awarded you a blog award on my site--come read about it and fetch the image at:

Clarissa - I hate all the same jobs too. The recipe looks great, I'll be sure to give it a go.
ReplyDeleteI love the old fashioned pictures of the woman dong her chores. She looks so happy it almost looks like fun!
I hate dishes!! And dusting. The first is necessary, but the other can be ignored for long periods of time.
ReplyDeleteWhat an easy recipe. I think it's what's for dinner tonight :)
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend.
You know I really like to cook and shop. Not a fan of poo and driving people around, though. Good recipe. I always like to have some rice on hand. Toss it in the rice cooker, put meat and/or veggies on it and call it a day. Or you can pair rice with beans or peas. Always good and easy.
ReplyDeleteLove the pairing list.A beer makes everything taste better!
Food is ALWAYS a good subject in my eyes!
ReplyDeleteYour hate list is pretty much the same as mine...
Oh Clarissa, you're talking my language. Thank you, thank you! Do you think whoever invented the concept of meat and 3-veg (as it's called here in Australia) was actually a frustrated writer who wanted to cook a quick and easy dinner with only four ingredients and no rutabagas? Just sayin'.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on hating cooking, cleaning, shopping and poop-scooping. My fiancee has given up on trying to domesticate me and just does most of it himself. I make up for it by doing the really gross and time-consuming once-in-a-while jobs. I can't cook for anything, but boy can I unblock a drain!
ReplyDeleteI also love that great advice on how to make a recipe lighter. "Eat less of it" needs to be written all over the walls of my kitchen!
ReplyDeleteSo good post
