Z is for Z End!

(Spoiler Alert!)

Today, I want to talk about endings. We're ending the challenge (sigh of relief) after twenty-six long and exhausting days. So lets talk about that.

Movie endings. The best movie endings. I'm going to discuss five of my favorite (In no specific order):

(1) The Usual Suspects - Who actually is Keyser Söze? We all want to know. This elusive mastermind is revealed in the end in the most unusual and yet satisfying way.

(2) The Wizard of Oz - It's all a dream...sort of. Are you telling me all this time the scared lion was symbolic? We don't always pay attention to the subtleties of this children's tale (I mean, let's face it, it's about the shoes) but there is a lot we can learn from this brilliant film.

(3) Citizen Kane - Considered one of the greatest movies of all time, this movie is all about finding the secret to a great man--Rosebud. The ending reveals the meaning to us, just before it is lost.

(4) Fight Club - I will just say this, the ending is unexpected. I cant say more because...
The first rule of fight club is --
you don't talk about fight club. The
second rule of fight club is -- you
don't talk about fight club.

(5) Thelma and Louise - It's almost like watching a car wreck but you can't turn your eyes. Almost...or exactly. But, the scene stays with you.

What movie endings stayed with you? Came at you out-of-the-blue?

  3. If you can't talk about Fight Club, how do you start a Fight Club?

  4. Oh yay for all these fab films!!!!

Ooh may I add TV series? The end of Twin Peaks!! I still remember screaming - "that's the wrong agent Cooper"!

Also, Sixth Sense. It wasn't so much the very end ending of Sixth Sense (yes I kind of knew lovely Brucie baby was dead) but near the end - when the boy shows that it was the mum of the dead girl who was slowly killing her. That horrified me.

Little Big Man. There I was thinking grandad is off to die...! Fab ending!!

Yay for finishing the A-Z challenge!!! Well done you!! Woo-hoo!!! Take care

  5. Aw yes. The Wizard of OZ. Never will forget that one. AND Thelma and Louise was a stunner. Like you, I was riveted.

I think I saw The Usual Suspects, but I can't remember it. My usual state these day! I'll have to watch it again.

And of course Citizen Kane. What else can I say except it's a Classic!

  6. Good question! I'm trying to think of one that was a surprise but nothing's coming to me. I'll probably think of one when I get up from the computer. :P
    Have a great weekend,

  8. Great movies! Nothing better than a twist. Right? Mmm, Inception was a pretty twisty movie. I remember when I first saw The Matrix. That ending as well as some of the scenes and dialogue have influenced our entire culture.

  15. Another FIGHT CLUB fan! :)

Let's see, the ending of TITANIC wasn't much of a shock!

The 1968 PLANET OF THE APES has a very memorable ending when Charlton discovers Lady Liberty...

& 2 more beachy ones: TRUE ROMANCE & THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION.

  16. One that has never left my head is the ending to Higher Learning in 1994. Tyra Banks in her early days, but what a movie! Was only thinking of it again yesterday.

Congratulations on getting through this challenge with aplomb Clarissa. Take a bow...

  17. Fight club really was such a badass movie I could watch every week! Good choice. I will have to think a little about my list, but Fight Club would for sure be on it. Well done on the A-Z.

  18. So true, Clarissa, endings are so important. It's what we are left with when we leave the theatre or finish a book.

For me Gone with the Wind had a memorable ending.

Now Voyager, a wonderful Bette Davis movie.

Mildred Pierce. Joan Crawford at her best.

There are so many more. Too many to mention.

  26. You picked some great ones. I need some time to come up with a good list, but off the top of my head some pop right up. First, I'd like to say that a great movie ending isn't always attached to a good movie...
    Chinatown
    Fight Club
    Blair Witch Project
    Citizen Kane
    The Godfather
    Plantet of the Apes
    The Searchers
    Wait Until Dark
    The Thing (original)

  28. The end of Saw was fantastic, I didn't see it coming.

  29. The Wizard of Oz, Citizen Kane - iconic. Also Get Carter (the original, Mike Hodges version - and I'm not saying that just because I was on a panel with him at a literary festival) and also Basic Instinct had a creepy ending (I know that's not what the film is remembered for). um... The Planet of the Apes... OK, I'm trawling through other people's answers because my mind is so blank! Great post though (as always here).

  30. Rats! I just wrote a response and somehow lost it. Great post, Clarissa (as ever). I remember the ending of The Planet of the Apes, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Citizen Kane, Basic Instinct (I know the ending isn't what many people remember about this film... um... mind gone blank.
