CAPTCHAS and Let Go

Okay, what is up with the Captchas? I mean really, it was enough with one word and now they want us to type in two? Personally, I don't allow Captchas and my blogger spam filter catches everything. I might seriously consider letting go of some blogs that allow captchas--too much work. Am I ranting?

What does everyone else think of CAPTCHAS?

yeah I noticed that the other day. Two is way too much

I completely agree. Since they changed it the other day, I've had to enter WV twice (or more) at least 75% of the time. They made it so much more difficult, and therefore, annoying. Thanks a lot, Google.

There is no reason for this. My blog gets 250 comments a week on average, and I NEVER have to delete spam.

I don't like the new one. I am temporarily suspending Captchas on my blog.

If I notice an increase in spam I will put all comments in moderation until I can view them.

Sometimes that's not always convenient for me--especially when my internet goes down, but I hate spam more.

Delia said...

Yeah, I disabled those a long time ago. Like you, I don't find them necessary, but I do find them annoying. There's really no good reason for it.

I wrote this over at Madeleine's blog and am repeating it here cos I'm too upset with Blogger! :-(

I loved the old word verification!
:-( And so I took the sad decision to disable my own word verification.

Sad, sad, sad day for me cos even I find it difficult to read! :-(

BOOOOOO TO BLOGGER CHANGES!! They know they can do all these unwanted changes without any thought for the blogger.

Take care

Amen! I've been hitting those all morning. With spam settings, they really aren't needed. Please drop word verification, people!

I noticed that last night. It's kind of irritating because one you usually can't hardly read. I get you don't want robots to read it but can you make it so humans can read it?

Kelley said...

I think I've been deemed a computer more than not. How can anyone read those things??

Cyndi Pauwels said...

I don't like Captachas much either, but I'm more receptive since my in-house computer guru, aka Hubby, taught me that there is an international project that uses them to help decipher difficult words in OCR of many of the documents being made available online. So when you get a word that is fuzzy or the letters are smudged, OCR couldn't decide what to do with it. It's now in the rotation for public input, and the most common perception will be accepted.

Normally (not always!) when there are two words in your Captcha, you really only need to get one right to move on.

Hope that helps!

LOL, apparently everyone is talking about this today! I don't really like it, but I understand why people keep WV turned on. But they are hard to read sometimes. :(

Two is too much.

I don't have Captchas on my blog. But spam does get through. Thankfully, not enough to make me go back to Captchas, but I hate the spam.

Cherie Reich said...

You're completely not ranting. The old captchas weren't too bad, but now the way they have them, it's horrible! It took me five times to comment on someone's blog post the other day. I hate that. I want to comment on people's blogs, but I can't spend all day trying to figure out the stupid captchas to do so.

Clarissa Draper said...

Cyndi, that's such an interesting tidbit. I didn't know. Why can't those researchers make it game and then make an app for that. I'm sure there are people out there that would love to try and guess WV for research.

Cyndi Pauwels said...

Clarissa, there may very well be an app for that ;-)

Right now, I look at it as doing my part to help make obscure literature more available.

BTW - I use Blogger, and I don't believe folks need to wade through Captchas to comment there. Am I missing something?

Richard said...

Oh, now I know what Captchas are. They are a pain. I don't think I have them on my blog. I hope not.

Matthew MacNish said...

Cyndi, you probably don't have the setting enabled.

Maria Zannini said...

Agh!!!

I no sooner disabled Captcha then the spam began.

I think those no good #$%@* were waiting for me to release the safeties.

L. Diane Wolfe said...

Owner approval is far better! Hate the new captcha words.

Carol Kilgore said...

I just encountered my first double-whammy right before coming here. I don't know why people still have these on their blogs. Totally unnecessary and these new ones are unbelievable. I think bloggers who use them will wonder why they're losing comments.

Hilary Melton-Butcher said...

Hi Clarissa .. I've met double captchas around on various blogs .. but if I had too many I would go nuts.

If they'd sort out the embedded comment box aspect - I'd be grateful as I can't comment on those ..

I have taken off word verification on my blog (for now ... or until ...)

I get spam through to my email - but the spam seems to catch it ..

Cyndi - I tried to type in one word once - and it 'threw' me out and I had to type both in ..

Cheers - Hilary

I hate them. It makes me not want to comment on blogs.

I hate captchas with a passion. I don't use them, and I haven't had problems with spamming. It's so hard to read the letters!

Angela Brown said...

I removed the word verification a while back from my blog. But I noticed the double word verification today.

I'd say it was done for a good cause, but can't really support that since any spam I used to get went straight to a nice little place where I could delete all. But haven't really gotten any lately.

DL Hammons said...

I really REALLY don't like them. I did away that level of security a long time ago and I haven't had nary a problem.

Lynda R Young said...

I am sooooooooo NOT a fan of them and wish everyone would take them off their blogs because they are sooooo annoying--more so now!! They aren't needed.

Joanne said...

They are a pain! I'm with Wordpress now but most of my favourite bloggers are with Blogger.

The Golden Eagle said...

I don't mind CAPTCHA all that much--but the new ones seem harder to read than the old, which is frustrating.

Indigo said...

I noticed this change today. My eyesight is fairly good, but I wonder how this will go over with people who don't see so well.

The CAPTCHA are annoying enough, more so when a blog, has it set up so the author previews comments before their posted anyway. So why make us jump through hoops with the CAPTCHA...(Hugs)Indigo

Charmaine Clancy said...

I HATE the word verifies - especially because one of them is always NOT an actual word.

Blogger has been catching spam for a long time now - it does a great job. PLEASE people stop being paranoid, get rid of the Captchas!

Thanks for the permission for us all to rant :)

DWei said...

They're stupid and don't really work. Seriously, just remove them from the blogs and then privately screen each comment.

Margot Kinberg said...

Clarissa - I do not like the captchas at all! I hope they get rid of them.

Cyndi Pauwels said...

Annoying, yes, but valuable to Internet security. And useful in another interesting way, as I mentioned earlier in this thread. Here's the full explanation:

I'm glad you don't use them! I don't--they're so irritating, and unless you have a huge following, you really don't need them (since bots pay less attention to you n' all).

DEZMOND said...

I'm not sure why on Earth some people still use it when we all mutually agreed not to use that Satan's device :) I'm also considering not commenting on the sites which molest their readers with that thing. It's impolite, rude and irritating!

Sierra Gardner said...

I got rid of them on my blog and have noticed I'm more annoyed now when I see them on other blogs. Half the time I can't even read the verification words anyway.

Su said...

I've asked at least two real-life friends to drop the WVs from their blogs. One said yes and has never had spam since; the other reacted as though I had suggested kicking a puppy. Le sigh.

And yes, Captchas are even worse. :(

Rowena... said...

You are so not ranting. Sometimes I don't get it right on the 1st (and even 2nd) try and by then I'm totally riled.

Southpaw said...

I hate them. They slow commenting down. I have considered the idea of not following sites that use it and not longer comments on blogs that have it either.

I could deal with the old one, the new on is ridiculous.

Melissa Sugar said...

Hate it. It has to go.

Madeleine Maddocks said...

Glad you've highlighted this too. I think that blogger are beginning to listen as I came across something different since...

LTM said...

Gah! Hate. Them. We need to do a "kill the captchas" blogfest. :D <3

J.L. Campbell said...

It's a nuisance. I came across what looked like Japanese characters yesterday. Course I had to to it twice.

Angela Ackerman said...

I can't stand them but someone passed on this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ht4qiDRZE8
so now at least i feel like I'm doing something 'good' when I do have to point it out, lol...
