Dr Kewal Krishan of the Department of Anthropology, Panjab University has found a way to determine the sex of a criminal by their fingerprints.
Why is this helpful? Well, obviously it will help narrow the suspects down to either sex.
"The goal of this study is to determine the gender based on finger ridge count within a well-defined area. Rolled fingerprints were taken from 550 subjects (275 men and 275 women) belonging to South Indian population all within the age range of 18–65 years. Results show that women have a significantly higher ridge count than men. Application of Baye’s theorem suggests that a fingerprint possessing ridge density <13 ridges/25 mm2 is most likely to be of male origin. Likewise, a fingerprint having ridge count >14 ridges/25 mm2 are most likely to be of female origin. These results are helpful as a tool for fingerprint experts as they can be used as a presumptive indicator of gender based on the degree of ridge density."

Hi, Clarissa,
ReplyDeleteI never know what tidbit I'm gonna get when I stop in here. Cool stuff! I can see you slipping this info. into a novel. :)
Oh, wow! That's really cool. Thanks for sharing. If I ever get back to mystery writing, then I'll have to slip this tidbit in somewhere. Hmm...
ReplyDeleteOh, that's really interesting, thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI never would have thought it.
ReplyDeleteThat's fascinating, Clarissa. I love all these scientific advances - great for our books too!
ReplyDeleteI had not seen this study Clarissa. Thanks. It will offer some excellent opportunities for other researchers to replicate the results.
ReplyDeleteInteresting! I never knew... Thanks, Clarissa!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea. That's so cool!
ReplyDeleteHow strange. Would this be affected by hormone therapy I wonder? Or what about hermaphrodites?
ReplyDeleteWow, that is amazing. I never would have guessed that in a million years.
ReplyDeleteThats fascinating, a wonderful detail, I wonder what accounts for the difference?
ReplyDeleteThat is fascinating! Who knew you could tell someone's sex from a fingerprint.
ReplyDeleteWell I never!! I'm now looking very very closely at my thumb! Take care

Oh, very cool! I wonder when this factoid will show up on CSI?
ReplyDeleteVery cool info! I'll pass this along to my mystery writer friends....and also tell them they NEED to follow your blog! :)
ReplyDeleteI find that intriguing because the other day my son got the whole family to try his new phone fingerprint locking device. And much to his horror, it opened for my fingerprint - and I'm his mother!
ReplyDeleteI have some ink - now I want to go test out this theory with my prints and my husband's.
ReplyDeleteGreat info for our stories, another tool to narrow down the villain!
ReplyDeleteGood to know! I had no idea...
ReplyDeleteThat's really interesting! What will they discover next. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is really interesting, but I thought they always could do this. Ah, but now easy to eliminate 50% of the population at the crime scene.
ReplyDeleteLove your A - Z idea. i won't be accruing points (I won't have a brain available to me over April) but I'll be fascinated as always by you and I'm sure there's a few of us with an idea for a book from our A-Z posts.
I hope you do get to visit me too and see our bloggie friends as kiddos.
Denise
HUH. That's good to know! I occasionally write crime elements into my novels, so definitely filing it away for future reference. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI love stuff like this. Thanks, Clarissa! :)
ReplyDeleteClarissa - This is so interesting! And really helpful, too. Yet another level of richness you add to my writing. Thanks :-).
ReplyDeleteooh, I didn't know this one, Clarissa.
