The Contest: If you can guess who the story is about or what event I'm writing about (leave the answer in your comment) based on the short story, you get a point. At the end of the month, I will tally up the points and the top five will each win a $10 gift card to amazon. I mean, if there is more than five top scorers, I may throw all the names into a hat and pick five but I'm hoping there will be top five.
Now, to the first story...
Who or what event is portrayed in this story?
Death By Air
“Come on, come on, come on, baby now, you know you twist so fine.” Valentin moved his arms and his legs, twisting to the ground as he sang. Although the song was American, he had heard it when one of his group brought it back from his travels abroad. Soon, all the men and their wives were singing it, including his wife, Lina.
How he missed his wife. Ten days had passed since he saw her and he still had another five more days without her. From the pocket of his woollen coveralls, he pulled out a small black and white photograph and smiled. In the field behind his house, his son had begged him to spin him around like an aeroplane.
“I want to fly up into the sky, just like you, Dad,” he had said. “Spin me round, spin me round. I want to know what you will feel.”
Valentin had done as he was asked, and his wife, who had just bought the camera with money she had saved up, captured the spin on film.
After he turned on the electric burner, he placed the kettle on top. He unbuttoned his coveralls and removed the monitoring bio-sensors from his chest. Rubbing alcohol sat on a shelf behind him. He soaked a cotton ball and he washed his skin where the sensors left round red marks on his chest.
With the flick of his wrist, the cotton ball flew through the air towards the trash but it fell short and landed on the hot plate. The cotton immediately ignited and flames swooshed into the air. Valentine pulled his arm from his sleeve and used it to slap at the fire but it caught fire in the oxygen-rich environment.
Within minutes, the fire ate up Valentine’s wool clothing. Outside the room, he could hear the doctor pulling violently on the pressure sealed door.
“It was my fault, no one else is to blame....” he uttered when the doctor had released enough pressure to open the door and pull him from the room. “It was my fault, no one else is to blame....”

Russian astronaut who is in training and loses his life in silly accident? That's my best bet. Not sure of the actual story but yep - death by air.
ReplyDeleteI've only had a couple of sips of coffee and can't think straight yet. So, I don't know. But I really like the story.
ReplyDeleteTeresa
I don't know but I'm certainly intrigued!
ReplyDeleteGreat start.

I have no clue what the story is, but Jan Morrison's guess seems good!
ReplyDeleteThis is a very unusual theme, and I LOVE that!

ReplyDeleteI don't know either! But I like the story!
ReplyDeleteClarissa - Oh, this is SO intriguing!!! I wish I knew but I did enjoy reading it.
ReplyDeleteHaven't got a clue but would love to find out.
ReplyDeleteI have no clue what the story could be.
ReplyDeleteSome sort of airtight containment unit? Some sort of bio chamber?
Whatever it was, that scene was excellent!
Thanks for sharing.
I have absolutely no idea! The guy being russian must be significant. Valentin?? No idea!
ReplyDeleteBut he nearly killed himself with the flick of a cottonwool on a hotplate! Yikes!
Take care

Valentin Bondakero or some such. A Russian cosmonaut. DH guess not mine. :D
ReplyDeleteI'm clueless...but it was still very entertaining! Great start!! :)
ReplyDeleteI wasn't sure. I like Jan's answer so I'm going with her. ;)
ReplyDeleteClarissa I have no idea either but I liked the story!
ReplyDeleteNo idea, but I love the story.
ReplyDeleteastronaut! Has to be...
ReplyDeleteidk, but the story was interesting.
ReplyDeleteNo clue, but sounds intriguing!
ReplyDeleteI ain't breathing air any more :)
ReplyDeleteI was thinking of the American astronauts who died in Appollo 1(?1) but Valentin doesn't sound very American to me (besides the reference to 'American' music)
ReplyDelete....but then, how come there was a kettle and burner in the sealed unit?
I'm befuddled but intrigued!
Looking forward to the rest of your posts! :-)
I was watching Apollo 13 last night, so the first thing that popped into my head was the U.S. rocket ship that caught fire on a routine test and the astronauts couldn't get out because the hatch was broken.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea but I'd like to read more.
ReplyDeleteI can't even think of a book, movie, or story that fits that scene.
ReplyDeletePoor Valentine got killed in a series of unfortunate events. I'm thinking this has to be one of those teen slasher things like Final Destination. Cotton ball catches on fire, catches him on fire, oxygen rich atmosphere, etc.
ReplyDeleteWas that a Chubby Checker song? Must be set in the 60s. I think air, Apollo, astronaut, stuff going awry in the air ...
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I enjoyed the story very much!
Wow, no idea!
ReplyDeleteHe was certainly unlucky!
ReplyDeleteUmm . .. I'm with Jan I guess, and yet I suspect more . . . great story!
ReplyDeleteGotta be an astronaut but not sure if it's a specific space station or shuttle incident...really like it!
ReplyDeleteI like this idea for the challenge. Can't wait to see the many ways you kill people. NO clue on this one...
ReplyDeleteI don't know . . . but it is a very interesting story!
ReplyDeleteThe Golden Eagle
The Eagle's Aerial Perspective
Great story, Clarissa, but I haven't a clue! How long to we have to wait before you spill the beans?
ReplyDeleteI love this, though I have no idea what the answer is. But this is definitely very intriguing! And thanks for asking about Jen. I brought her home Friday noon, and she's on medication that's working, and she now acts and feels like herself again.
ReplyDeleteI love the banner announcing your book at the end of this post; it's really stunning. I'm looking forward to getting it....

Okay I know he is a oxygen rich environment but where? Could be in space, could be under the ocean, but with a doctor around. Maybe a pressurized tank for deep sea divers for the bends.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea, just a guess.
Pamela Jo
This, too, made me think of an astronaut -- Virgil Gus Grissom. But I don't think it's an astronaut. He's obviously a 'specimen' of some sort.
ReplyDeleteThis is a super idea for posts, C.
Awesome! I think it's an astronaut too.
ReplyDeleteJust to go against what everyone else is saying....
ReplyDeletePerhaps someone who is in an underground shelter after an ELE-type scenario?
Nope, I have no idea, but I'm intrigued.
ReplyDeleteHi Clarissa .. I thought I could guess - then the whole thing changed - and the story developed along a new route .. perhaps Howard Hughes - but I've no idea why I said that ...
ReplyDeleteCheers Hilary - and want to know the answer!!
