Today I have the always interesting and insightful, Carol Kilgore. Her book, In Name Only, has recently debuted and she's here to give us some insights into the story and her writing.
(1) When did you come up with Summer and Gabe's story and
what prompted it?
Thanks for hosting me, Clarissa. I'm looking forward to
blogging with you.
I first came up with Summer and Gabe's story about five
years ago. I had written a short story about a young woman who finds herself in
the Federal Witness Security Program and sold it to a magazine that is now
defunct. A year or so later, I found a second home for the same story with an
online zine, which is also no longer in existence. When I placed the story the
second time, I started wondering what would have happened to the character, and
IN NAME ONLY was born. The original short story has been reworked and retitled
to NEVER SAY MY NAME and is now the mini-prequel for the novel.
(2) In your book you featured arson and the Witness Protection Program. What sort of research did you have to conduct?
(2) In your book you featured arson and the Witness Protection Program. What sort of research did you have to conduct?
I started by conducting research on firefighters and
firefighting. I read articles online and reached out to other writers I knew. One
of the writers was the daughter of a retired firefighter, so I asked him all
the things I knew at that point to ask. He gave me answers plus terms that
firefighters use, sort of firefighter jargon. Then I talked directly to
firefighters with the Corpus Christi Fire Department to learn the structure of
their department, how their shifts were constructed, things like that. Most
importantly, I talked to a writer/psychologist who gave me the basic overall
psychological profile of an arsonist. Her help let me add several additional
layers to this character.
(3) I know you live in Texas but what made you choose Padre Island as your
setting?
I love Padre Island. When I was a kid, our family went camping there in the summers. These trips are stories in themselves. When I started thinking about IN NAME ONLY, we lived near Corpus Christi Bay, just inland from Padre Island. So I seized the opportunity to write about one of my favorite places.
(4) What are some of your worst writing distractions?
Our dogs. Without question. We have two extremely smart herding dogs. They're like having two toddlers in the house and underfoot 24/7. Two LOUD and messy, but very loving, toddlers.
(5) Any writing tips or techniques or words of wisdom you want to share with
us? How about a favorite writing quote?
Write from your heart. If you don't fall in love with your characters and story, no one else will.
Edit from your brain. Get rid of all the things that don't pertain to this particular story and tighten your prose so that readers experience and understand the real story you're telling.
I love reading writing quotes, and nearly all of them inspire me. But can I remember one at will? Of course not! I do recall a cartoon with a writer's muse aiming a gun at the writer's head and saying, "Write!"
Taped to the bottom of my monitor is a phrase I typed so I see it every day: "Just write the [expletive] thing." It helps to keep me focused and on track, especially when things get crazy.
(6) Which authors inspired you to write this book?
Every author I've ever read.
(7) What other books within your genre would
you compare it to? Or, readers of which books would enjoy yours?
This is a difficult question
for me. I'm not an analytical person. My books are a blend of genres, so I
guess it's best not to compare but to give you current genre writers who have
most impacted the way I write. This is not to say that I'm comparing my writing
or my stories to theirs. Readers may find certain elements of their writing in
my novels.
Please remember, these are
bestselling authors who have published many books. I'm a newbie.
Linda
Howard's characters often find humor in everyday situations as well as strange
places. So do mine. I think we must share a similar sense of humor.
Lisa
Scottoline writes strong, independent female protagonists with an ensemble
cast. She's an All-Star. I'm still in the minors.
Those of you who've read IN
NAME ONLY, how would you answer this question? As you can see, I need help here. Warning: I may steal your answer the next
time someone asks!
(8) If you had to pick actors
to play your characters in a movie rendition, who would you choose?
I never thought about this. So I went over to IMDB and
looked around. It's a good thing I'm not a casting director is all I can say.
After a good bit of time, I chose for Summer: Charlize Theron. After her hair
grows back. And for Gabe: Christian Bale--tall, dark and handsome plus intense and sexy!
Do you like my choices? Who would you choose?
No
home. No family. No place to hide. For Summer Newcombe, that's only the
beginning.
The
night Summer escapes from a burning Padre Island eatery and discovers the
arsonist is stalking her, is the same night she meets Fire Captain Gabriel
Duran. As much as she's attracted to Gabe, five years in the Federal Witness
Security Program because of her father’s testimony against a mob boss have
taught her the importance of being alone and invisible.
No
matter how much she yearns for a real home, Summer relinquished that option the
night she killed the man who murdered her father. But Gabe breaks down her
guard and places both of them in danger. Summer has vowed never to kill again,
but she's frantic she'll cost Gabe his life unless she stops running and fights
for the future she wants with the man she loves.

Informative interview Clarissa and Carol. I like the thought of "editing in my brain." I also think by using that technique you can constantly be editing--no matter what non-writing activity occupies your time.
ReplyDeletePlus Carol's setting has bonus appeal for me--my father lives on Padre Island.
My wife will be excited about the Christian Bale part. And if you're not writing from a place of passion, the story suffers.
ReplyDeleteGreat interview, ladies!
Write from the heart and edit from the brain? I love those tips! They say it perfectly. :)
ReplyDeleteClarissa - Thanks so much for hosting me today. I'm looking forward to blogging with you!
ReplyDeleteSlamdunk - Glad you like Padre!
Alex - Thanks. Be sure you tell her :)
ReplyDeleteLinda G - Sounds easy enough, right? LOL
Great tips. And hey, my daughter is moving to San Antonio.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I love hearing the whole process of what inspires a story.
ReplyDeleteEm-Musing - Hope your daughter loves it here!
ReplyDeleteJennifer - I always like that, too.
How dare you mention Christian Bale in an interview and not supply me with a muscled shirtless pic of the Dark Knight stud.
ReplyDeleteI am forever disappoint.
Love the 'write from your heart'quote! Nice interview Clarissa.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by, everyone! I've read Carol's book and it's fantastic. It's so nice to know a fellow blogger better.
ReplyDeleteWonderful interview, ladies! I love that your novel started as a short story, Carol.
ReplyDeleteGreat writing advice! And love your choices for the lead roles. :)
Padre Island is a great setting, Carol. Write what you know, right?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the interview, ladies!
Michael - I am SO sorry I forgot to include that. Next time. I promise :)
ReplyDeletePat - Thank you.
Clarissa - Thanks for the kind words :)
Cate - I just follow my imagination.
Emily - We crossed. Padre is an awesome place. Both ends are civilized. In the middle is wild barrier island.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy research and talking to experts, so can relate to the research that went into writing this novel.
ReplyDeleteI always love hearing about inspirations behind the stories we write. Great interview! Thank you for introducing us to Carol! :)
ReplyDeleteJ.L. - I love doing research, too. I end up with mounds of it in the file and three words in the story. I'm so afraid of including too much that my CP's and editor asked for more. Much easier fixes than filling a plot hole :)
ReplyDeleteDL - I like knowing the story behind the story, too.
Hello Clarissa and Carol! Great interview and writing tips. You inspire me, Carol. It has been such a joy to follow you. Thank you and looking forward to following Clarissa now too!

What a great interview! I have to agree that my dog is my greatest distraction, but so worth it!
ReplyDeleteIt's a good thing the furry ones are so sweet :)
ReplyDeleteExcellent advice! I'm a Linda Howard fan too. I always enjoy the humor she puts in her stories.
ReplyDeleteHi Clarissa and Carol .. interesting informative interview .. and I love learning more about authors and their distractions of life .. your two toddling four legs - sound delightful fun. So true no need for falseness - honesty of the passionate heart should lead our mind's writing ..
ReplyDeleteCheers Hilary
Great interview, ladies! I'm sad I never got the chance to go to Padre Island when I lived in Texas. It'd make a great setting!
ReplyDeleteGreat interview, Clarissa and Carol! Thank you. And I totally agree with with writing that comes authentically from the writer's mind and heart. It's more passionate that way.
ReplyDeleteShelley - Sometimes hers are laugh-out-loud funny :)
ReplyDeleteHilary - I've seen your photo on other comment lists, but I think this is the first time our paths have crossed. Nice to meet you.
Talli - Now you have a reason to visit :)
Margot - We have to open up and put ourselves out there. I was going to say 'expose ourselves' but that takes on a whole new meaning, LOL.
What an excellent choice to set it in Padre Island. I love that place. It was one of my favorite vacation spots.
ReplyDeleteCongrats, Carol!!
Maria - I love Padre, too!
ReplyDeleteLoved this interview. Like Carol's determination and her research and setting. Thanks to both of you,Carol and Clarissa.
ReplyDeleteDenise
Very nice interview!
ReplyDeleteI'm about halfway through the book and LOVE it. I would have finished it by now if I didn't have so many interruptions because of my disabled daughter as well as the memoir I'm trying to finish ghost writing for my friend. IMO In Name Only is a page turner. And since I'm almost to the middle of it and thus immersed in the details, this interview, Clarissa, really interested me. I'm always interested in what kind of research a writer does for such a story (this genre is my favorite next to memoir). And the writing is perfect. It really is. No mechanical errors to speak of. This is an element that can really bug me, probably because of my background as a grammar teacher and a proofreader. But nothing in Carol's writing (she's a great proofreader herself) to distract me. The dialogue is natural, the prose flows. The romance isn't your sticky sweet kind of romance that I just can't read; nor does the romantic element overwhelm the main thread of the story. The suspense builds. The characters feel like real people. The whole thing is simply very well done. GREAT job, Carol. I'll soon be posting a review of In Name Only on my blog and on Amazon.
ReplyDeleteDenise - I am determined and persistent. As my husband will attest :) What better place than a beach!
ReplyDeleteAnn - Thanks for such kind words. I'm glad you're enjoying the story.
Now I really want to see the In Name Only movie! What fantastic casting choices. :)
ReplyDeleteIn Name Only is such a wonderful book. Thanks for sharing this great post from Carol, Clarissa. :)

ReplyDeleteHappy Weekend!
