H. H. Holmes - Serial Killer

The Alphabet in Crime Fiction - The concept was started by Kerrie at Mysteries in Paradise. This week's letter is the letter H.

Here are the rules: By Friday of each week participants try to write a blog post about crime fiction related to the letter of the week. Your post MUST be related to either the first letter of a book's title, the first letter of an author's first name, or the first letter of the author's surname, or even maybe a crime fiction "topic". But above all, it has to be crime fiction. You could write a review, or a bio of an author, so long as it fits the rules somehow.

H.H. Holmes

Who was he? Herman Webster Mudgett, better known under the alias of Dr. Henry Howard Holmes, was one of the first documented American serial killers in the modern sense of the term. In Chicago at the time of the 1893 World's Fair, Holmes opened a hotel which he had designed and built for himself specifically with murder in mind, and which was the location of many of his murders. While he confessed to 27 murders, of which four were confirmed, his actual body count could be as high as 200.

  1. Yes, he came up a few months ago when I was researching something - can't remember now - but his story is very chilling.

  5. I hadn't heard of this serial killer, but I'd like to know more about the hotel and who were some of his victims. I might even like to know some of the gory details. Sometimes, the dark side of my personality is intrigued by this.

  6. I first found out about this Holmes through Erik Larson's Devil in the White City...one of the few and far-between serial killer/true story books that I've read. Larson does a good job with the material. Very chilling indeed.

  13. Now there's a mind with a taste for the nefarious. His doings should make interesting reading. 200 murders is a lot to commit.

  18. My mum was always fascinated by true crime when we were growing up, but I never heard of this character. Grizzly! One of my first school short stories was about a woman who killed her guests, stuffed them and put them in showcases behind the walls like pictures around the house...
